How does your gut affect your weight?

Human body contains trillions of bacteria that can be both beneficial and harmful for your health. Most bacterias live in the gut where they can affect how your food is digested, how fat is stored and whether you feel hungry or full. Consequently, healthy gut bacterias may be important for maintaining a healthy weight.

There is a microbiome in a human body that is home base for bacteria in the digestive tract. Here, they help your body break down nutrients from the food you eat into micronutrients which a body can use as energy, building components and other purposes. Human’s gut is an important chemical factory that contributes to food digestion.

The gut bacteria may affect your weight by influencing how different foods are processed in your body. Dietary fibre is digested by certain species of gut bacteria, which may aid weight loss.

By affecting your appetite, your gut bacteria may play a role in your weight.
Too many of the wrong gut species such as parasites, yeasts or bad bacteria or not enough of the good ones such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria, can lead to serious health issues and weight gain.
Some simple recommendations can significantly improve your gut health and consequently help you remain a healthy weight:
  • Include more whole grains, fibre-rich foods such as nuts and seeds, unprocessed, unrefined foods in your diet; cut out sugary food, artificial sweeteners and refined carbs;
  • Make sure that you eat predominately vegetables and plant-based food;
  • Eat good fats such as omega 3 fats and monounsaturated fats, such as extra-virgin olive oil;
  • Take probiotic supplements in order to cultivate good bacteria;
  • Add fermented food such as swas, kimchi, tempeh, and miso contain probiotics.

Everything you eat will eventually end up in your gut, so try to feed your body only with food that can can support healthy gut flora and give healthy gut bacteria a chance to flourish and multiply.
